The tour company that Geoff and Lee Swift bought back in 1992 had already been existing for 10 years, offering one and two day tours, camping and fishing trips throughout the Marlborough High Country.
Since taking on the business, the current owners expanded the tours to go through the Awatere, Molesworth, Hanmer Springs, Rainbow Valley and the growing wine country of Wairau Plains in Marlborough. They also started one of Marlborough’s first seven day a week wine trail tours.
Together with the help of a great team of drivers/guides and the locals who open their homes, gardens and property to them and their guests. In those first 15 years they developed a unique range of high country experience tours based around the Molesworth Station, Awatere Valley and Rainbow Station for people wanting a real New Zealand holiday experience. The tours also grew length (ie from one to two days to three and four) and the focus was upgraded from scenic to heritage - offering those on the tour an in depth and fascinating look at the environment, its people and history.
Geoff and Lee are in the midst of even more change, having already diversified their tours to include cycling, whitebaiting, trips as far as Southland and Stewart Island and over to Golden Bay in the Top of the South. They will tailor make tours and are back running wine tours but this time they are very specialised.
Other tours operating now include the Bluff Oyster Festival, Otago Rail Trail, Alps to the Ocean, Culverden Fete, personalised scenic South Island tours.
They are still running their highly succcessful and popular Molesworth Tours (which can be one to four days).
An exciting range of new tours are in the pipeline and include a turbo cycle tour from Nelson to Queenstown; the Five Pass cycle tour (through Porters, Arthurs, Lewis, Lindis and Haast passes; Tag Along West Coast and Otago; West Coast Cycle tour (Karamea, Westport, Lyell - Old Ghost Road, Oparara Road, Coastal Road to Heaphy Track, Charming Creek, Denniston Plateau ); and an Aviation Tour (from Auckland to Southland).
Why we do what we do?
We absolutely love the Awatere Valley, and Molesworth Station. From the scenery, the people, the relaxed rural lifestyle and all the intangible aspects of this wonderful part of rural back country NZ.
We believe the best way to discover the essence of all that the backcountry is about is to experience a tour with guides who have an affinity with the land.
Geoff is a country boy at heart and loves telling a good yarn and sharing his passion for the Molesworth and rural NZ.
Lee loves to look after people by making sure all the little details are thought of of to ensure a hassle free and memorable holiday for everyone of their guests.
We totally agree with this quote from :
“We believe that a tour or holiday should be about exploring the differences of our stunning landscapes while meeting the people that have chosen to live amongst this challenging land. And during that holiday I want to get dirty while having fun and expand myself by being challenged, breathing fresh air and being awed by what Mother Nature has created”
Hi Geoff and Lee,
I found the Molesworth Heritage tour excellent. I expected impressive scenery and to learn more about the history of the area but what I experienced well exceeded my expectations. The tour was very well planned giving our small group time to enjoy our surroundings and to absorb that which our excellent driver/guide,Trevor, had to tell us about the fauna and flora and the history of the area. I learnt a great deal.
There where many highlight but one which I particularly enjoyed was to meet with the Stevenson family, of Upcot Station, and to chat over a mug of genuine Billy tea. That’s kind of encounter is probably only possible if travelling in a small group.
I have been recommending your company to friends and acquaintances.
Kind regards from a well satisfied customer.- Ann WarnerDec 2014

My Mum & I thoroughly enjoyed our recent tour with you. We loved the variety. You packed so much into those 4 days but it was still very relaxing. The food was fabulous. Loved the two restaurants we went to in Hanmer & Kaikoura – both top quality.
It was great being able to meet locals like Bill (outstanding morning tea! ), Roza at Paripuma and the Secret garden couple in Blenheim. The High tea was an awesome way to end the trip.
We were blown away by Peter Yealands property. The scenery was inspirational. What a beautiful part of the country you live in.
I have recommended the trip to some work colleagues who are keen to go on it.
We thought it was the best tour we’d ever been on. We couldn’t fault it and Geoff was amazing. His enthusiasm, great driving and local knowledge really made it enjoyable.
Thanks again- ClaireNov 2015
Our second trip with your company was even better than the first because we took the 4 day trip and we would recommend it as a wonderful holiday.
The countryside was rugged and spectacular and our guide really knew the history of the area and was able to point out to us exciting things we could never have imagined.
The accommodation and all the meals were excellent and we stayed in country homes we would have had no access to.
It was a lot of fun, very well organised and we felt it was a great privilege to experience the life in this very rugged and wonderful areas. Thank you very much - I recommend the trip to one and all.- Jackie NicollFour Day Molesworth Heritage Tour March 2014
We would like to thank you again for the great tour.
The thoughtfulness that has gone into the tour as far as the variety of sites, accommodation, riding and scenery is brilliant. Geoff’s knowledge of the area made for every step being so interesting.
We cannot speak highly enough of the experience – a great way to see a part of the country most New Zealanders have never seen. Thanks again.- John. Molesworth Four Day Cycle TourMolesworth Four Day Cycle Tour March 2014
Scheduled private car and driver online before starting cruise. I requested specific wineries to visit and to include lunch.
Driver, Geoff arrived at Dock in Picton right at noon for half-day tour. He was very knowledgeable about Marlborough wineries and the industry. Lunch was wonderful and we enjoyed visiting 4 wineries. Cost was very reasonable and the knowledge of Geoff made for a wonderful afternoon.
Would highly recommend Molesworth Wine Tours.
